Hawthorne Neighborhood

Welcome to the Hawthorne Neighborhood.

Hawthorne Neighborhood Association boundaries are Michigan Street to Washington Street from Belmont Avenue to Tibbs Avenue. The neighborhood is very diverse and we focus on inclusiveness of all of our neighbors.

In June of 2010, residents from Hawthorne Neighborhood Association teamed up with IMPD officers, IFD firefighters, the Indianapolis Public Safety Director, our Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaison, Health and Hospital representatives, representatives from the Prosecutor’s Office, students from the Bridge Program for the first annual Public Safety Day Walk in the Near West!

In July, neighbors braved the heat for another Hawthorne neighborhood street and alley cleanup. August of 2010, Hawthorne participated along with Near West to host a National Night Out against crime event. Despite the intense heat, neighbors came out to enjoy hot dogs, sodas, and Salsa music. Additionally, we met in small groups to discuss our wishes and hopes for the neighborhood and how to turn them into concrete steps towards improvement.

In October, Hawthorne participated in an alley cleanup in collaboration with the Saints in the Street efforts of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Holy Trinity, West Park Christian Church and several Southside churches. Also many Hawthorne residents helped plan, volunteer and attend Hawthorne Community Center’s annual Hootenanny Fiesta! We enjoyed seeing our Creature Collages made at the Near West Picnic, at Haughville Park. Neighbors also enjoyed traditional American chili along with traditional Mexican fare while children participated in costume contests and played games.

We look forward to working with residents in 2011 and making it out best year ever. Please come and participate in your monthly neighborhood association meetings.

For additional information please contact the Hawthorne Center at 317-637-4312.
