Community Garden & Fair

 Join the Haughville, Hawthorne, We Care, and Stringtown neighborhoods for a great opportunity to plant a youth community garden and learn about healthy and sustainable living.

FREE HEALTH FAIR AND CARNIVAL

On May 11th  the community will come together to plant a garden at Friendship West Side Center for Excellence in the morning from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm . A health fair and carnival will follow from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The health fair and carnival will include education sessions, fitness activities, and other fun and games for adults and kids

…before January 1, 2014 when the tougher new GED test arrives!

Compared with today’s test, the 2014 test will require:

1. Writing 2 essays instead of 1

2. $120 to test instead of $70

3. Computer skills, instead of paper and pencil, to mark your answes and type your essay

4. Completing short answer, fill-in-the blank, and other question

5. Higher level math and reasoning skills, such as more algebra

6. A greater percentage of correct answers to pass.

Save time and money: Pass the GED exam before January 2014.

The Near Westside is an area just west of downtown Indianapolis that is rich with culture and history.  Its many community assets lay the foundation for a quality-of-life plan that shows why the Near Westside is the up-and-coming place to live, work, and be in the city.  The Near West consist of four neighborhoods of Haughville, Hawthorne, We Care and Stringtown and has identified seven priority areas to improve their community, and each priority falls under civic priorities, social priorities physical priorities, and economic priorities.  The Near West Collaborative a community program of HawthorneCommunity Center is proud to support the Near West Youth in High Def Youth Council in their efforts on focusing on civic priorities that pertain to youth in the area.

This year, HawthorneCommunity Center and Near West Collaborative will launch a youth entrepreneurship program and training session.  The Youth Entrepreneurship Training and program will include on-going workshops, one on one mentoring, and interactive activities  designed to engage inner city youth to learn how to become an entrepreneur, using their skills, gifts, and talents.

The key benefits of this training will allow youth the opportunity to learn how to start and maintain their own business by introducing the key aspects of business development, management, leadership, and communication with hands-on participation.  In turn, as a participant, the youth will increase their household income, increase youth employment opportunities, help deter youth risk behaviors, and positively improve the economic status of their community.

In order for this program to reach its highest potential, we are seeking support from local businesses and organizations like yourself to sponsor a portion of our Youth Entrepreneurship Training.

Your sponsorship will allow a youth to create a complete business plan, receive up to $500 in start-up funding for supplies and equipment, access a business mentor, and use of booth space at the 2013 Youth in High Def Youth Summit to promote their business in their community.
