911 Info from Marion County Sheriff’s Department

Callers often questions why the dispatcher ask so many questions when a call is made to 911. Callers wonder why the dispatcher doesn’t just send the Police instead of asking questions. Answers are needed to know how many cars to send, if medics are needed and other information.  Questions are also asked for the following reasons:

They need answers to the 6 W’s which are:

  • Where is the emergency? (Address/Intersection/Landmark critical information)
  • What is the emergency?
  • Who is involved? (You may now know but give the best description possible)
  • When did it happen? (If it is not happening now, it is not an emergency)
  • What is the Welfare of the person(s) (Are they bleeding, unconscious?)
  • Are Weapons involved?

If the dispatcher continues to ask you questions, it is because they either do not have enough information in order to dispatch OR They have already dispatched but need additional information to get to the officers that are already on their way.

Please answer all questions to the best of your ability and stay on the line with the dispatcher until they have all the information. Know that the purpose of their questions is to protect everyone involved and provide you with he best service possible.
